Stay with me. You're doing well.

Cherry Blossom is the surgeon you want in the room when you're at your worst. Not because she's louder than the others — she isn't — but because the moment she walks in, the room gets quieter, and quieter is exactly what you want when somebody is about to open you up.

The hands

She arrived on the island on the 1st of September, 2025, and from her first shift in the surgical bay it was clear the RHS had gained somebody who already knew exactly what kind of doctor she wanted to be. She works long. She works precisely. She works without making a fuss about it.

The juniors who scrub in with her remember the same things: the way she names every instrument before she takes it, the way she explains what she's about to do as she does it, the way she keeps her voice exactly low enough that nobody in the room has to ask her to repeat it.

The bedside

What she's known for, though, is what happens before the OR and after.

Cherry has a way of sitting down beside a frightened patient that doesn't feel like a doctor sitting down. It feels like a friend who happened to be wearing scrubs. She talks to them the way you'd talk to somebody you've known for years — calmly, with full attention, without any of the practised brightness hospitals default to when they don't know what else to do.

People remember it. They tell their families about the one who came in and made it feel survivable.

The name

She wears the name Cherry Blossom for the same reason she does the rest of her job — because she chose to be the soft thing in a hard place, and she wanted people to know it the moment they heard her introduced.

It works. Patients exhale when they hear it. Even the colleagues who'd normally tease a name like that don't, because they've all worked beside her at three in the morning when the room was falling apart, and the name fits.

What gets said about her

The line that comes up most often, when the people who've worked with her are asked about her, is some version of the same sentence:

"She changed my life just by being herself."

She would refuse to take that credit. She would tell you it's the team, the patient's own will, the equipment, the timing — anything other than her.

The team would correct her.

Now

Cherry is still in the RHS, still running long shifts, still sitting on the corner of frightened patients' beds with no hurry in her shoulders.

The island is luckier than it knows.
