Kayla D Russo grew up in Italy with her sister — the only person she trusted before the world taught her not to. Life there was hard. Eventually the two of them got pushed out of the family home, and the road they walked out on split before they'd gone very far.
They lost each other.
The years alone
Kayla was on her own and in a bad place. She doesn't dress that period up — "down in the dumps," is how she puts it when she mentions it at all — and she fell out of the legitimate side of the world somewhere in it.
She started small. Shop robberies. Whatever the till had on it. She stashed the money in places nobody would think to look, slept in whatever empty building had a roof that night, and learned the rhythms of the city by which corners stayed dry and which ones didn't.
Through all of it she kept her phone close, in case her sister ever rang.
The cars
Cars came next. She started stealing them, then scrapping them, then selling the parts to whoever paid. It was the first work that felt like a craft instead of a survival tax. She got fast at it.
She got better than fast.
The reunion
Years later — years of running her own quiet show — she walked into the gang life and found her sister already there. The two of them have been within reach of each other ever since.
Kayla became a shot caller. Under-the-radar work: moving product, crafting parts for heists, brokering deals on the side. She kept the violence at arm's length and the operation tight. People who tried her once didn't try her twice.
The garage now
By day she's a mechanic. A good one. She'll lift the bonnet on whatever you've broken, name what's wrong before you finish describing it, and have it back to you with the right fluid topped up and an upgrade she didn't quote you for.
She has, by her own description, the only manicure on the island that smells faintly of gear oil. She's at peace with that.
"Speed is life. If you don't have the right car, that car isn't for you, boo — you need the one that calls your name, the one that feels the soul."
On trust
People who've worked with her know the shape of her one rule:
"Actions speak louder than words. Words can be broken so easy."
You don't get vouches out of Kayla. You earn them. She gives them slowly, and rarely.
On her driving
She has one fault and she's the first to volunteer it. She is — in her own assessment — the worst driver on the island. She will tell you to sign a will before you get in her car. She'll then drive you somewhere terrifyingly fast, and somewhere wrong, and somehow still arrive.
She gives herself five stars anyway.
She is the only one who does.
